Year 1921 Silver fob. Full hallmarks on the rear: “I.F.” the maker, the anchor for Birmingham, the Lion Passant (English mark for 925 Silver), boxed uppercase W for the year 1921.
These English fobs, mostly created in Birmingham and mostly in Silver, were made to hang from a watch chain, as a bauble. The above example could have been commissioned by a club or association, often given out with inscriptions such as “2nd Prize for Such’n’Such on Whatever Date” finely hand-engraved on the shield surface especially incorporated into the fob for such proclamations.
Birmingham produced Silver jewellery and artefacts for the whole country, indeed was sometimes called “Silver City”.
