Year 1920 Enamelled Silver fob. Full hallmarks on the rear: “U & Co” the maker, the anchor for Birmingham, the Lion Passant (English mark for 925 Silver), boxed uppercase V for the year 1920. The top Silver ring is also stamped with the Lion Passant.
The enamelled heraldic form on the front, red cross on white background, four lions on the cross, indicates the fob was destined for the city of York. York would have had an assay office but had no real Silver production capacity, as Birmingham did. Birmingham produced Silver jewellery for the whole country, indeed was sometimes called “Silver City”.
These English fobs, mostly created in Birmingham and mostly in Silver, were made to hang from a watch chain, as a bauble. The above Year 1920 example was presumably made to appeal to a citizen of York; they were often commissioned by clubs and associations, given out with an award inscription such as “2nd Prize for Such’n’Such on Whatever Date” most finely hand-engraved on a surface especially incorporated into the fob for such proclamations.
