Vivid Ruby Red, 18ct Gold and Silver ring. .43ct cut 4.25mm round, very good colour, bright and alive, quite deep red with flash of pink, African origin, from Mozambique. Note: the actual colour of the above Vivid Ruby is a little darker than shown in the site images. The images show it more pink than the reality, for the reality is more deep red with pink flash.
Ruby belongs to the Corundum crystal family, which includes Sapphire, and these two are considered the second toughest of gemstones, primo in that respect being Diamond. Even with constant wear it is difficult to mark or scratch the upper top flat face of Ruby, though if the wearer works at it, it is possible to nick the side facets of Ruby gemstone.
The ring setting is handcrafted in Sydney, a Christopher William design, the gemstone mount for this fine Ruby worked in solid 18ct Gold and fused into the very sturdy handmade Silver band. 1.6grams of 18ct Gold used in the Ruby mount, solid right through the depth of the Silver band and visible underneath.
The creation of the Silver band required painstaking effort, and time: slightly domed, tapering from 5.2mm at top to 4.5mm width at rear, 2.5mm thick to 1.9mm, with a flat-side profile, was work. The ring took over 4.5hours to make.
