New Butterscotch Amber, of Baltic origin, very well-matched, very nicely handcut and polished in the oval elongated rounded form so popular in late Victorian English graduated strands of this same Baltic “butterscotch” Amber, opaque and buttery of colour.
The old Victorian strands of this opaque yellow Baltic Amber are now increasingly rare, and it is now normal practice for English dealers in such items to collect beads of this type at any opportunity -usually out of the remains of broken strands- so long as they are in some sort of reasonable condition, and, when enough suitable beads are collected, create a necklace in the old Victorian style.
Amber is an organic gemstone, not crystalline, and though impervious to water, it will over time and wear absorb natural body oils and quite naturally darken. The New Butterscotch Amber in the above earrings is of the same quite vivid yellow that those Victorian strands possessed when first created and worn some one hundred and forty years ago.
With some care (keeping away from the chemicals of perfumes, for example, and giving a wipe with a damp cloth after wear), the beads in the above earrings will keep their colour for many years.
Note: though superfine Amber beads like these are costly enough, the greater cost element by far in the above earrings lies in the cost of the 1.3 grams of solid 9ct Gold used in the making, and the Sydney hand-working of the Gold.
