Quartz crystal is the crystal family of which Amethyst is the violet variety. Quartz is a tough gemstone, considered the benchmark of hardness, any crystal gemstone harder said to be very tough, anything less hard just that, and more susceptible to damage. The above Amethyst gemstone, being cut round, cabochon, with no facets, renders it that much less susceptible, for there are no facets to chip.
