Superfine Laos Silver Work. Laos is known for its quite bold and solid tribal jewellery, its heavy bangles and torks fashioned from one piece of solid pure Silver, hammered and annealed and hand-worked; it is also known for its very intricately crafted artefacts. The matched conical pieces in the earrings shown above are good examples, in miniature, of intricately crafted Laotian Silver work.
The detail in this matched pair is phenomenal, one hand-worked pattern after the other, layer upon layer, all handcrafted. There are twelve pattern layers in all, culminating in the central largish granule
This matched pair is new, crafted in pure 999 Silver, purchased recently at the big weekend market in Bangkok, from Laotian traders. The plates soldered on the rear, together with the elegant fixed earhooks, are handmade in Sydney in Sterling Silver.
The price quoted here is an indication of the value placed by the Laotian traders themselves on this sort of work.
