Solid Lapis Lazuli, natural ultramarine deep blue, handcarved and polished in Jaipur Rajasthan from rough sourced in the far north-east of Afghanistan, in the mountainous region up close by the border with Tajikistan. Lapis Lazuli since antiquity has been mined in this same area; a valued ornamental and jewellery gemstone in the time of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, among the leaders of Ancient Rome, and treasured in Renaissance Italy as the ingredient of the most expensive of oil paints, for Lapis Lazuli ground up was the main pigment of ulramarine, the deep blue so liked by Michelangelo.
The inhospitable region where the mines of Lapis Lazuli are situated was the only source for thousands of years, until large deposits of the gemstone in Chile became commercially productive in the early 1900s.
