This type of minimal setting allows the rear of the Amethyst to be totally open, allowing maximum light penetration. This is especially nice with the rounded cabochon cut in gemstones such as Amethyst and Garnet which have no facet edges from which light may reflect and flash.
The rounded domed cabochon cut in gemstones such as Amethyst, Garnet, Peridot etc, is not perhaps as popular as the facetted cuts, but is nonetheless appreciated for the hint of depth and mystery it can impart to a fine gemstone.
