SOCIAL

$650.00

Seven Bohemian Garnets of characteristic vivid red, with four small natural Bahrain Pearls, in a pendant finely handcrafted in Silver in Vienna or some other Austro-Hungarian city pre-1914.
The centre Garnet is a particularly good example of this uncommonly hard type of Garnet gemstone, having not only an excellent fiery red colour but also, at 6mm round, an unusually large size.
Pendant 32mm long, 35mm wide; Silver chain 46cms length, with the two extra small lengths of Silver chain and the pendant itself adding a further 45mm. (Silver chain is new, added in Sydney to the pendant.)

Seven Bohemian Garnets in an Antique Silver pendant handmade in the late 1800s, early 1900s, created in Vienna or in one of its satellite cities in the pre-1914 world of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Podvedice region of Bohemia, in Czechoslovakia, was Europe’s source of the red Garnets such as the Seven Bohemian gemstones above, and Bohemia, just north of present-day Austria, was firmly integrated into the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Bohemian Garnets, with their hardness and fiery red colour, have been appreciated since ancient times and became very popular in Europe in the period around 1900.
Bohemian Garnets are usually quite small in size and 5mm to 6mm round gemstones are quite rare and reserved for finer and more costly settings. The centre gemstone of the above Seven Bohemian Garnets is 6mm round and of that characteristic fiery red.
Note: four small natural Bahrain Pearls, silvery-grey, complete the picture of a pendant fashioned as fine jewellery, for natural Pearl of any size, before the creation of “cultured Pearl” in the 1950s, was costly.
