Ruby Vietnamese, cabochon cut opaque, 12x9mm oval, 5.85ct in weight, of a gorgeous rich deep pink. Ruby belongs to the Corundum crystal family, second only to Diamond in the gemstone hardness scale. Sapphire and Ruby are the two members of the Corundum crystal family, both extremely hard and durable gemstones, and when the Ruby or the Sapphire is cut round, or cabochon, it makes the gemstone really very difficult to damage, for though the top flat face of a facetted Ruby or Sapphire is sort of impervious to hard knocks, the edges of the side facets can suffer chips. The above Ruby, with no such facets, is extremely durable.
