Ruby 1.7ct “Star”: the source of this type of opaque Ruby gemstone material is South India, Karnataka state, in the region of Mysore, hence the name “Mysore Ruby” by which this gemstone is commonly known.
When this opaque Ruby material is cut cabochon, or round, in a particular way, with the myriad gemstone inclusions, or “silk”, lining up just so with the flat base of the cut, six-point asterism, a six-ray “star”, is formed.
This six-point star is permanent, moves across the gemstone surface with the source of light, and is very distinct under sunlight or a direct pin-point light. An interesting gemstone, not only for its story, but also because it is extremely difficult to damage being of deflective cabochon cut and being as well one of the very toughest gemstone crystals known.
