Opal Play of Colour distinguishes gemstone Opal from “common” Opal. Gemstone Opal has an internal structure which refracts penetrating light, broken up from white light to colours. The white Opal in the ring shown above displays a Play of Colour across its entire surface, basically pink to orange. The colour play is very delicate; it is when the colour play is strong and vibrant and vivid that the price truly jumps.
The Opal in the above ring is a doublet, the term given to an Opal gemstone which consists of a thin slice of the gemstone given a backing of ironstone, making for a considerably less costly Opal.
Any solid gemstone Opal with good Play of Colour is extremely costly.
