Matched Orange Corals, Vintage Amber, in earrings created in Sydney all on Silver.
The Matched Orange Corals are old handcut Tibetan beads, purchased from Tibetan traders in New Delhi in the 1980s; from the Mediterranean originally, they would have been handcut sometime around the mid-1900s; well-matched in size and natural saturated gem-quality orange colour.
The vintage Amber is natural Baltic, beads handcut circa 1950s/1960s, possibly from one of the Baltic States but probably from Poland, the beads a little included but quite translucent and of a particularly fine rich “honey” colour.
Note: both the gemstone types used in the above eardrops are classified as organic gemstones. Most gemstones are crystalline in form, from Diamond to Ruby, Garnet and Quartz, but a small number of gemstones prized throughout history are non-crystalline, formed from living organisms, like Pearl for example, and Ivory; the gemstone Mediterranean Coral and gemstone Baltic Amber of the above eardrop pair are very good examples of organic gemstones.
