Handcarved Turquoise Teardrops, in bezel settings specifically handcrafted for this pair. The Turquoise pair, already carved, was sourced in Kabul, Afghanistan, and taken to Jaipur, Rajasthan, where the Silver bezel settings were crafted. The Silver earhooks are Sydney made.
Turquoise, of course, is commonly traded in Afghanistan, the major historical source for this precious gemstone being just across its western border region; and the sky-blue of this pair is definitely a Persian Turquoise colour, so we have to assume that these Turquoise gemstones are definitely from the ancient source.
Note the characteristic pyrite inclusions; note also the characteristic slightly waxy surface appearance. This almost glassy appearance, though normal and characteristic of genuine untreated Turquoise, is often in American Turquoise masked, through high polish and surface waxing.
Turquoise is one of the two gemstone “rocks”, the other being Lapis Lazuli. (Most gemstones are crystalline, while a few, such as Pearl and Amber, are considered “organic”.) Turquoise is a porous material, and its colour can be affected through exposure to chemicals such as exist in perfumes and detergents and suntan lotions. When Turquoise is natural and untreated, as the above pair is, then some care is required not to expose it to such chemicals.
Even with the best of treatment, Turquoise will, with time and wear, slowly darken in colour; better to allow it to do so naturally.
