Fine Tahitian Black Pearl, 18ctGold. Tahitian Black Pearls are not really black, but rather charcoal grey, or silvery grey, often with undertones of almost a rainbow hue, with hints of purple and green. The relatively inexpensive “Black Pearl” on the market is dyed Akoya or Freshwater, attractive but not in the same league as the Tahitian Black.
The name “Tahitian” stems from the large black lip oyster which produces this type of Pearl having its home in the waters around the Polynesian islands in the Tahiti region. This black lip oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) is the source of the only natural black Pearl.
The above Fine Black Tahitian Pearl teardrop has an unblemished 10.6mm round bottom of a lovely deep silvery grey, deepening in colour towards the more narrow neck of the teardrop where there is an almost iridescent undertone of purple. A lovely gemstone.
The very simple mount for this gemstone is handcrafted Sydney, in solid 18ct White Gold. The 18ct Gold stamp block is in solid 18ct Yellow Gold.
