After the First World War an urge towards simplification came into play in England and Europe, brought on in no small part by the failure of so many skilled artesans to return home. Labour-intensive craftsmanship became much more costly. In the case of jewellery surface decoration which before WWI would most likely have involved painstakingly applied wire and granulation work, less labour-intensive design techniques such as the embossed work of the above English Inter-War Silver earrings, came into play.
