Coral Five Gram Bead. This old bead’s long service is attested by the nicely worn hollowings around the two holes. Tibetan, purchased from Tibetan traders in Janpath, Delhi, in the 1970s. Coral has been (and still is) highly prized in Tibet and in China, and the Coral was sourced from the waters of the China Sea around the island of Taiwan. Supply from the China Sea has dwindled over the last fifty years and more, and even in the 1970s it was much more common for Tibetans to be trading in Coral from the Mediterranean than from the China Sea.
The above bead is characteristic of Taiwan Coral, in the calcite streak inclusion, and in the lovely saturated orange of its colour.
