Coral Button: this lovely old gem-quality Coral is from a Victorian English and Gold brooch of the late 1800s, probably 1880s. The rear of the gemstone, hidden in its mount, was flattened somewhat for better sitting in its original brooch mount, hence the term “button”.
The fine deep saturated pink-orange of this gemstone was one of Victorian England’s very favourite gem Coral colours. Of Mediterranean origin, the Coral would have been cut in southern Italy in sets, specifically for brooches to be handcrafted in England in Gold.
A fine large Coral gemstone of this sort of excellent gem colour is now very difficult to source.
