830S Silver Stamp Norway, and Norway is in fact the origin of this oval Art Nouveau pair, though Sweden and Germany also used the 830S stamp, which is the Silver mark indicating 830 parts in 1000 Silver content in the stamped item. Silver standards of 800, 830, 835 were common in northern Europe before WWII, after which these Silver standards tended to be replaced by the 925 standard used in America and the UK. To complicate matters further some countries, even after adopting the 925 mark, continued to use that region’s old Silver standard, and in some cases, and Norway was one such case, even after the 925 standard had become the norm, jewellers would still stamp their product 830S Silver when indeed it was 925 Silver, of the higher Silver content, in the belief that the old Silver mark was a selling point, indicating a greater “vintage”.
So yes, it can be complicated. The above 830S Silver oval Art Nouveau pair was originally on a set of 1930s Norwegian Silver cufflinks; the ovals have been removed from their cuff linkage and transformed into an elegant pair of Silver earrings, with nicely-proportioned fixed hooks especially handmade for them in Sydney.
Scandanavian Silver Art Nouveau jewellery, in brooches, bracelets, earrings, pendants, in the first half of the 20th.C. were almost always hollowed out at the rear; the above pair, originally intended for cufflinks and therefor needing to be stronger, are solid, not hollowed at rear. Each earring has a wight of 5 grams, which while OK for most, might cause irritation for some.
