As the fabled Ruby gemstone deposits of Burma are becoming depleted, producing less in both quantity and quality, Rubies from Africa, in particular Mozambique, are dominating the world market. There are fine Ruby gemstone deposits also in Madagaskar, but these are mostly in difficult terrain, and the political environment is less stable.
Mozambique Ruby can have a bright orange-tinged character, but the 5mm round gemstone in the above Sydney-handmade ring is of a quite deep red.
As is the case with the vast majority of the world’s Ruby gemstones, this gemstone has undergone heat treatment, to eradicate some of the gemstone’s inclusions, thereby enhancing its colour and clarity. This effect is permanent. Untreated Ruby gemstones of good colour fetch a large premium, and must come with an authentication certificate.
