Gold Fob, Chester 1911: the Hallmarks are clear, the stamp of a set of scales, or weights, designating Chester, and a florid capital L the year 1911. Fobs such as this, in Gold or Silver, were created to be added, as an adornment of some significance, to the watch chain connecting the button hole and the pocket in which the was was kept.
The significance of this fob to its wearer is very legibly inscribed on one of its two shields, the fob recognising the achievement of 2nd place in a prestigious 50 mile handicap race.
Quite fine hand-engraving. WW1 loomed ahead, and it claimed the lives of so many English craftsmen that such excellent metal work became rare.
