Rare Yellow Tibetan Amber. The source of this yellow opaque “butterscotch” Amber is the Baltic Sea. English traders found in Tibet in the 1800s a  ready market for this particular variety of Baltic Amber. Up to that point the Tibetan tradition in gemstone bead jewellery had centred on their own highly valued Turquoise, mined at several West Tibet sites, and gemstone-quality Coral, imported firstly from China then, again through English traders, from the Mediterranean.
The combination in jewellery of blue-green Turquoise, orange-red Coral, and yellow Baltic Amber is unique to Tibet.
There was a time in the 1960s and 1970s when Tibetan refugees were selling off their old Turquoise and Coral and yellow Amber beads, but in more recent times Tibetans, along with the Chinese, have driven the market for these old gemstone beads; they are now increasingly difficult to source, especially in any sort of decent size, which the above Amber is, at approx 16x10mm dimensions.
