Combination Silver and 18ct Gold pendant. This combination of the white metal Silver with Gold in jewellery is an ancient concept. Platinum was not introduced to Europe until the 1700s and by the Victorian era of the 1800s the English were frequently combining Gold with Platinum; Silver, however, continued to be used in white/gold jewellery, simply because it was considerably less costly than Platinum.
And, of course, it is also considerably less costly than White Gold, which, though first created in the 1700s, was not produced commercially until the 1920s when the American government prohibited the use of Platinum in jewellery.
Christopher William uses the Silver/Gold combination out of a liking for it, and the fact that Silver stays silver in colour, where White Gold is a grey-silver, to which it will revert after the rhodium plating wears.
